Understanding Urban Climate Action

The scale of recent changes across the climate system as a whole, and the present state of many aspects of the climate system, are unprecedented over many centuries to many thousands of years. It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean, and land. By 2020, the concentration of carbon dioxide, one of the key greenhouse gases, had risen to 48 percent above its pre-industrial level. As a result, global warming is increasing at a rate of 0.2°C per decade. The period from 2011 to 2020 has been the warmest decade on record, with global temperatures reaching 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels in 2019. A 2°C temperature increase compared to pre-industrial times is projected to further impact natural ecosystems, human health, and well-being, resulting in a higher risk of extreme weather events.

This compendium aims to build a basic understanding of the ongoing climate crisis and guide readers through various aspects of climate change at both global and national levels. In particular, climate change and its impacts in urban areas are addressed in greater detail. The document highlights the co-benefits of climate action in cities and provides specific case studies across various thematic areas, enabling urban practitioners to better understand climate change mitigation and adaptation in urban contexts.

The compendium offers a broad perspective on climate change, including its causes, impacts, and solutions at the local level. It is designed to be a useful resource for awareness generation and capacity building among urban stakeholders.
