Yearbook of Global Climate Action 2024

The climate crisis, once regarded as a distant threat, has now become a stark reality, profoundly affecting lives, ecosystems, and economies with unprecedented intensity. Across the globe, heatwaves scorch urban centers, rising seas threaten coastlines, and communities—ranging from small island nations to expansive cities—struggle to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Yet, amidst these escalating challenges, a growing wave of resilience and innovation is emerging, fostering a sense of hope and possibility.
At COP 28, the world witnessed transformative stories of determination and ingenuity in combating the climate crisis. From the concept of the “15-minute city,” driven by the Green and Thriving Neighbourhoods programme, to Africa’s Great Green Wall initiative, which has successfully restored 20 million hectares of land in the Sahel, these examples highlight the capacity for collective action. Such initiatives remind us of the potential to pivot toward a sustainable and thriving future. COP 29 stands as a critical juncture to build on this momentum and turn ambitious goals into immediate, impactful actions.
A Collective Effort Towards a Resilient Future
As High-Level Champions, we have observed a significant surge of effort among non-Party stakeholders striving to create a just and resilient future. However, to meet the urgency of the moment, critical priorities—ranging from nature restoration to a gender-just transition—must translate into tangible economic and societal impacts that transform industries and regions.
The Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action has been pivotal in catalyzing this transition by aligning non-Party stakeholders with the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2024, essential priorities have guided impactful progress across sectors, laying the groundwork for collective action.
Achieving Net Zero Emissions
Reaching net zero emissions remains a cornerstone of climate action. The Race to Zero campaign exemplifies this commitment, uniting more than 15,500 members—from cities to financial institutions—around science-based targets. These efforts illustrate that ambitious climate action is both achievable and beneficial. COP 29 presents an invaluable opportunity to strengthen these pathways, enabling stakeholders to accelerate and scale emissions reductions toward a net zero future.
Strengthening Resilience for a Sustainable Tomorrow
Equally critical is the need to bolster resilience in the face of climate impacts. The Race to Resilience campaign has set an ambitious goal of improving the resilience of 4 billion people by 2030. With over 41 partners across 164 countries, the campaign has already made substantial progress, reaching over 2 billion people most vulnerable to the climate crisis. By 2030, it aims to enhance the resilience of 3.2 billion people, supported by $40.88 billion in pledged adaptation finance to implement Resilience Action Plans.
Additionally, the Sharm el-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda, launched at COP 27, continues to focus on transformative adaptation efforts across key systems such as water, agriculture, health, and infrastructure.
The Path Forward
The climate crisis demands a unified, urgent response that transcends borders and sectors. While the challenges are immense, so is the potential for transformative change. Initiatives like the Marrakech Partnership, the Race to Zero, and the Race to Resilience underscore that global collaboration, grounded in science and innovation, can drive meaningful progress.
As we look to COP 29, the world stands at a defining moment. This is the time to turn ambition into action, ensuring that resilience, sustainability, and justice remain at the heart of our collective journey toward a thriving future.
