Solid waste management and resource utilization in China and Africa

Shanghai is a municipality directly under the central government on the eastern coast of China, located at 31.14°N latitude and 121.29°E longitude, on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean and the eastern edge of the Asian continent (see figures 1.1 and 1.2). Shanghai borders the East China Sea to the east, Hangzhou Bay to the south, and connects with Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces to the west. To the north, Shanghai is bordered by the Yangtze River estuary where the river meets the East China Sea. Together with the neighboring provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui, Shanghai forms the Yangtze River Delta (Wang et al., 2002). Shanghai sits on relatively flat terrain whose average elevation is below 4 metres in most areas (Deng et al., 2002). The city has a dense network of rivers, mainly including the main Huangpu River that flows through the city and its tributaries such as the Suzhou, Chuanyang, and Dianpu rivers. Dianshan Lake is the largest in Shanghai. The city includes three main islands: Chongming, Changxing, and Hengsha, with Chongmin being the third largest island in China (Wang et al., 2012).

As an important component of the Yangtze River Delta, Shanghai’s geographical location is the best among Chinese cities in that it is a hub for international trade and logistics, and the city serves a vast inland market (see figure 1.2). The city is thus a hot spot for domestic and foreign investment, providing Shanghai a solid foundation for rapid development, especially in financial services, high-tech industries and manufacturing Shanghai’s location is also an important factor in its development into an international metropolis. It not only connects the East and West geographically but also builds a bridge in economy and culture, making it a focus of transport and communication multiple times in history.
