10 Years Cities Development Initiative for Asia

The question “What is your favorite city?” provokes responses and instant answers—usually not short ones. Answers typically contain words such as “safe,” “clean,” “walkable,” and “green”—all emotive and linked to progress, how the city makes you feel, why you like being there, and why it’s easy to live there. Little do we realize that our favorite city took many years of hard work and transformations before actually making it to our list.

Behind a “favorite” city, there are various efforts that support its growth. Such a city would most likely be providing jobs and services to a rapidly expanding urban society, responding to the adaptation and mitigation imperatives of climate change, adopting the 4Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle, and recovery), and preparing and implementing an economic development plan that involves all government, business, and community stakeholders. It would also be building on strengths and opportunities, planning to overcome technical, competitive, environmental, and disaster risks.

Moreover, an ideal city fosters inclusive service delivery, provides the organizational structures for community-driven development, and ensures social services and physical infrastructure through partnerships with the private sector and communities.
