Peshawar case study: building out accessible and inclusive public transport for all

Zu Peshawar is not just a transit system-it’s a symbol of what’s possible when a city puts people first. Since its launch in 2020, this Gold Standard BRT has redefined mobility in Peshawar, moving over 250,000 passengers daily and, at its peak, reaching 316,000 riders-a third of whom are women, a remarkable leap from just 2% before the BRT’s arrival. For women, youth, and people with disabilities, Zu Peshawar has opened doors to the city that were once closed, thanks to thoughtful design and a relentless focus on inclusivity.

This transformation didn’t happen by accident. It was the result of visionary leadership, strong policy, and a commitment to equity. The system’s accessible stations, dedicated spaces for women and people with disabilities, and integrated ticketing have set new standards for the region. The introduction of new express and feeder routes, along with tech upgrades like the enhanced Zu app, show a system constantly evolving to meet the needs of its riders.

Zu Peshawar’s journey has not gone unnoticed. Recognized with multiple international accolades-including an STA Honorable Mention, a Gold Standard BRT ranking, and finalist status for the Prize for Cities Award-it stands as a model for sustainable, people-centered mobility in South Asia and beyond49.

The lesson from Peshawar is clear: when cities invest in inclusive, resilient transport, they unlock opportunity and dignity for all. Zu Peshawar’s story is proof that bold, people-first planning can transform not just how a city moves, but how it thrives.
