The world biggest fashion companies ranked by CO2 emissions

When we think of fashion, we picture runways, style, and self-expression.
But there’s something else woven into every thread: carbon.

In 2022, some of the world’s most iconic fashion companies also turned out to be some of the biggest carbon emitters. Behind the glitz lies a tough truth: Style has a footprint.

Here’s a look at the CO₂ emissions from the world’s top fashion brands:

Nike tops the list at 18.2 million metric tons.
Inditex (Zara, Bershka, and others) isn’t far behind at 17.7 million metric tons.
Adidas and H&M follow closely with 7.7M and 7.6M, respectively.
Luxury isn’t exempt: LVMH (which includes Dior) released 6.9M, while Kering (Gucci, YSL) hit 2.9M.

Even brands with smaller market share, like Lululemon (1.7M) and Ross (0.6M), contribute their share to the growing climate bill.

The Fashion Industry’s Climate Challenge

The numbers may feel abstract, but the reality is not.
Millions of tons of CO₂ means:

  • Heavier pressure on our planet
  • Accelerating global warming
  • A fashion system that still thrives on volume over value

What Needs to Change?

It’s not about shaming brands.
It’s about rethinking the system how clothes are made, how fast they move, and what we value in fashion.

Consumers can ask more questions.
Brands can invest in low-carbon design and transparent supply chains.
Everyone can make smaller, smarter choices that add up.

Style shouldn’t cost the Earth.
The future of fashion must be as beautiful behind the scenes as it is on the surface.

Which side of fashion’s story will you wear?
