The Silent Pollution Behind “Cheap” Fashion
Fast fashion looks like clothing. In reality, it is fossil fuel in disguise.
Most modern garments are made from synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic—materials derived from petroleum. Every shirt, jacket, and dress carries a hidden carbon footprint that begins with oil extraction and often ends as environmental pollution.
The issue is not only how clothes are produced, but how quickly they are discarded.
Across global trade networks, millions of used garments circulate through secondhand markets every week. In places like Kantamanto Market, a major textile hub in Accra, large volumes of imported clothing are resold. However, a significant portion is already low-quality, unsellable, or near end-of-life before reaching buyers.
What cannot be sold becomes waste.
This textile overflow clogs drainage systems, accumulates in landfills, and is often openly burned—releasing toxic smoke and microplastic particles into air, soil, and water systems. Because these fabrics are plastic-based, they do not truly disappear; they fragment and persist in ecosystems for decades.
This reflects the hidden cost of “cheap” fashion:
• Oil extracted from the ground
• Converted into synthetic fabric
• Worn briefly
• Discarded globally
The solution is not only recycling, but redesigning demand itself. Longer-lasting materials, responsible production, circular systems, and conscious consumption are becoming essential rather than optional.
Sustainability is not about slowing fashion. It is about rethinking value.
