A multi-model assessment of inequality and climate change

The distributional impact of climate change is accelerating inequality, and redistributive policies might be the only way out.

A recent paper that uses various modeling approaches suggests that redistributive mechanisms like global carbon taxes and per-capita dividends have the potential to lower the Gini index by nearly two points.

Similarly, effort-sharing schemes that allocate mitigation responsibilities based on economic capabilities and emission levels can foster a fairer distribution of the costs and efforts required for global climate initiatives.

Addressing climate change globally requires asking questions people don’t want to answer, spending governments don’t want to disburse, and changes people don’t want to accept.

Meaningful progress demands a fair burden-sharing, between and within countries and between and within generations.
