Beginner’s Guide to Becoming a Greener and More Sustainable City

This booklet is a beginner’s guide on how to become a greener and more sustainable city. It is based on the advice and recommendations of urban planning experts from cities that have successfully transitioned to sustainability. It also includes the latest knowledge and expertise from environmental legislation specialists at the European Commission, as well as those involved in managing European funding opportunities for cities and EU knowledge-sharing networks and research.

Structure of the Guide

The guide is divided into twelve sections, aligned with the categories covered by the European Green Capital Award.

   • The PDF/paper version allows you to review the questions and draft answers before registering and completing the questionnaire online.

   • Explain each topic from first principles in a practical way.
   • Outline the costs and benefits of taking action, based on real experiences from participating cities.
   • Include links to detailed tools, information, funding opportunities, and more for cities ready to take the next steps toward improvement.
3. Real-World Best Practices
   • Showcase detailed case studies from cities shortlisted for the European Green Capital Award.
   • Cover timings, financial implications, how challenges were overcome, and other key insights.
