How public spaces in Haiti are transforming lives

Haiti, a nation of vibrant culture and resilience, has long faced challenges in urban development, especially in its informal settlements. According to a 2014 WHO estimate, 74.4% of Haiti’s urban population live in informal settlements—densely packed areas with limited access to basic services. These challenges were magnified by the catastrophic 7.2-magnitude earthquake on January 12, 2010, which displaced over a million Haitians and left Port-au-Prince grappling with a shattered urban fabric.

In response, Emergent Vernacular Architecture (EVA Studio) collaborated with the Lavi Nan Miyò Katye Pam (LAMIKA) program to breathe new life into three vital public spaces in Carrefour-Feuilles. These spaces—Place Tapis Rouge, Place Kay Alfred, and Terrain Campeche—have become beacons of hope, reshaping neighborhoods and inspiring new ways of living.

Reimagining Public Spaces: A Vision of Transformation

Place Tapis Rouge
Once a tent camp for displaced families, Place Tapis Rouge has been reimagined as a vibrant hub for the community. By centering local voices through participatory design, this space now offers not just physical amenities but a sense of identity and pride. Its proximity to a public water station, school, and main road underscores its role as a critical community connector.

Place Kay Alfred
Nestled at the base of a ravine, this site previously served as a small soccer field prone to flooding. EVA Studio’s design transformed it into a multifunctional public space, bridging the ravine with a community gathering area. The inclusion of a basketball court, playground, seating, and greenery doubled the usable space, providing a sanctuary for connection and recreation.

Terrain Campeche
Famous for its local football tournaments, Terrain Campeche has been upgraded with artificial turf and a secure perimeter, making it a regional draw for sports and community events. Improved accessibility via a newly constructed road enhances its role as a social and recreational anchor.

Designing Beyond Infrastructure: A Holistic Approach

EVA Studio’s innovative approach demonstrates that public spaces are not just about physical upgrades—they are platforms for resilience and empowerment. Here’s how the initiative made a lasting impact:

   Fencing, solar lighting, and community-driven suggestions have created safe, inclusive spaces that cater to women, children, and families.

   Through art workshops and participatory planning, community members became co-creators, fostering a sense of pride and responsibility for these spaces.

The transformation of these public spaces underscores powerful lessons in urban development:

  Quality public spaces are often undervalued in fragile urban areas. However, this project shows how integrating public spaces with risk mitigation measures can maximize impact without significant additional costs.

  Active community involvement ensures that public spaces are not only functional but cherished. This inclusive approach has proven critical for long-term sustainability, from maintenance to fostering social ties.
