Hydrometeorological disaster in Bali and NTT: weather, impacts, and policy reflections

My deepest sympathies go out to everyone affected by the recent floods and landslides in Bali and Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). The loss of life and the immense disruption to communities remind us that natural disasters are not just random events; their impact is also a direct reflection of our preparedness and policies.

The Urgency of Proactive Disaster Management

The tragedies in Bali and NTT underscore the critical need for a new approach to disaster management, one that goes beyond simple relief efforts. We must focus on spatial planning and flood mitigation as urgent necessities to protect vulnerable communities. The truth is, proactive planning and well-thought-out policies can dramatically reduce the scale of a disaster.

At the Resilience Development Initiative (RDI), we are working to turn this vision into reality. Our efforts are dedicated to building local resilience and advocating for better flood management strategies. We believe in empowering communities with the knowledge and tools they need to anticipate and reduce their own vulnerabilities.

Introducing the Multihazard Preparedness (MHP) Knowledge Hub

To support this mission, RDI has launched the Multihazard Preparedness (MHP) Knowledge Hub. This platform is a central resource for comprehensive analysis, groundbreaking research, and strong advocacy on a wide range of hazards, from floods and droughts to earthquakes and other climate-related risks.

By taking an integrated approach to multiple hazards, the MHP Knowledge Hub equips communities, policymakers, and stakeholders with the data and insights necessary to prepare for a complex and changing world. It’s about moving from a reactive to a proactive mindset—from simply responding to disaster to actively preventing it.
