A Taste of Tradition: Indonesia Unveils Its Agrobiodiversity Riches in Rome

A vibrant celebration of Indonesia’s land and labor has arrived in the heart of Rome. Amidst the global showcase ‘From Seeds to Foods,’ hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Indonesia is doing more than just exhibiting it’s inviting the world to experience the soul of its agricultural heritage.

From October 10-13, 2025, in Rome’s Park of Porta Capena, Indonesia joins nearly 150 nations to mark World Food Day and FAO’s 80th Anniversary. But for Indonesia, this is a moment to shine a spotlight on the deep, sustainable connection between its people and the earth.

The Treasures of the Archipelago

Indonesia has brought a carefully curated selection of its four flagship commodities, each a story of regional pride:

  • Organic Rice: The lifeblood of the nation, sourced from the fertile lands of Subang and Tasikmalaya in West Java, and Magelang in Central Java.
  • Lady Finger Bananas: Sweet and distinct, traveling from the sun-drenched fields of Lumajang, East Java.
  • Snake Fruit (Salak): The unique, scaly-skinned delicacy from the pristine agroforestry systems of Karangasem, Bali.
  • Sago: The resilient, staple food, representing the ancestral wisdom of the Sentani communities in Papua.

Minister Rachmat Pambudy captured the profound human element at the exhibition’s opening, stating, “Behind every grain of rice or piece of fruit are the hands of farmers, both men and women, young and old they deserve not only praise but also respect, justice, and recognition for their hard work.” It’s a powerful reminder that global food security is rooted in the dignity of those who till the soil.

Innovation Hand-in-Hand with Heritage

Indonesia’s participation is a bold declaration of its commitment to the future. Ali Jamil, Acting Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted a transformation underway: turning the agricultural sector into a modern, competitive, and sustainable industry. It’s a delicate balance of boosting productivity while rigorously safeguarding the nation’s extraordinary biodiversity and strengthening local economies from large exporters down to the smallest SMEs.

This is where international partnership truly blossoms. The product selection itself is a testament to the long-standing cooperation with FAO since 1948, yielding tangible results for local communities:

  • The Lumajang Banana Project: Through FAO’s One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) initiative, farmers are receiving crucial support to improve quality and market readiness for their lady finger bananas.
  • Papua’s Sago Resilience: In Sentani, support from the Ministry of Agriculture, FAO, and the New Zealand Embassy is helping build small-scale processing units and strengthening customary communities’ capacity for sustainable sago production, significantly reducing loss and securing local livelihoods.
  • Bali’s Global Honor: The snake fruit agroforestry system in Karangasem has earned the prestigious recognition as Indonesia’s first site on the list of FAO’s Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).

Rajendra Aryal, FAO Representative, beautifully summarized the Indonesian spirit: “Indonesia once again demonstrates that both traditions and innovations can go hand in hand.” It’s an approach that ensures food security by honoring the past while embracing a sustainable future.

The ‘From Seeds to Foods’ exhibition, themed ‘Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,’ offers a true journey of discovery an invitation to see, taste, and hear the stories of agrifood systems experts, technologies, and culinary traditions from across the globe, all unified by FAO’s vision of the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, better environment, and better life, leaving no one behind.
