Policy Brief Nature for Resilience

Ecosystem degradation and unsustainable natural resource management are drivers of climate and disaster risk,3 as recognized by the Sendai Framework. The triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution is increasing environmental and disaster risks. This in turn leads to both economic as well as non-economic losses (such as loss of life, health, heritage, knowledge and ecosystem services). Human and ecosystem vulnerability are intrinsically linked,4 yet a knowledge gap remains regarding nature’s contributions to preventing disaster or reducing people’s vulnerability and exposure to them.5 Urgent action is needed to reverse current negative trends. There are multiple opportunities for designing, implementing and reporting on actions for nature that reduce climate and disaster risk as well as enhance resilience. A focus on vulnerability as well as climate and disaster risk reduction can boost cooperation towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, in line with key policy frameworks such as the Sendai Framework, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and its Land Degradation Neutrality targets.
