Redefining the Urban Pulse: ITDP Indonesia’s February 2026 Update

In an era where urban density is rapidly increasing, the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) Indonesia continues to advocate for a future where mobility is a right, not a privilege. This month, we explore how sustainable infrastructure is transitioning from a “green luxury” to the backbone of our economy.

1. The Electrification of the “Last Mile”

As seen in our latest initiative icons, the focus has shifted heavily toward electric micro-mobility. While large-scale transit like the MRT and LRT are vital, the true success of public transport depends on how easily a citizen can get from their doorstep to the station.

  • The Goal: Integrating e-scooters and electric mopeds into the existing TransJakarta ecosystem.
  • The Impact: Reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 15% in residential corridors by the end of the fiscal year.

2. Equitable Access: Beyond the City Center

Equity in transportation means ensuring that residents in suburban and low-income areas have the same quality of service as those in the CBD. ITDP is currently working with local governments to:

  • Expand Pedestrian Networks: Creating “walkable kampungs” that prioritize shade and safety.
  • Data-Driven Policy: Utilizing real-time traffic data to reroute under-served bus lines, ensuring no neighborhood is left in a “transit desert.”

3. Sustainable Policy as Economic Recovery

Transportation isn’t just about moving people; it’s about moving the economy. By prioritizing high-capacity transit over private vehicle infrastructure, Indonesian cities can:

  1. Lower Household Costs: Reducing the financial burden of vehicle maintenance and fuel.
  2. Improve Public Health: Lowering the respiratory health costs associated with urban air pollution.
  3. Optimize Land Use: Converting parking-heavy areas into green public spaces or affordable housing.

“A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It’s where the rich use public transportation.” Enrique Peñalosa, ITDP Board Member Emeritus

Moving Forward

This February, ITDP Indonesia is launching a series of workshops for urban planners focused on Transit-Oriented Development (TOD). We believe that by building “up” instead of “out,” we can preserve our environment while fostering vibrant, connected communities.
