Spoons That Don’t Cost the Earth

Plastic cutlery is a huge contributor to global pollution — but India’s edible spoons are turning that problem into an opportunity. Created by engineer Kru Patel, these spoons are made from natural flours sourced from local farmers and come in flavors like beetroot, chocolate masala, spinach, and mint.
Since 2017, over 300 million spoons have been sold, preventing roughly 120 metric tons of plastic waste from reaching landfills. At just 3 cents each, these spoons are affordable, scalable, and zero-waste.
Why this is a circular innovation:
♻️ Zero waste – edible or fully compostable, nothing goes to landfill
🌿 Chemical-free & biodegradable – safe for people and the planet
👩🌾 Supports local economies – farmers supplying flours benefit from sustainable demand
🏢 Mainstream adoption – major brands like Domino’s are showing sustainable alternatives can thrive commercially
With 120 billion single-use utensils used annually in India alone, innovations like edible spoons prove that waste can be reimagined as resource. Circular thinking isn’t just theory — it’s practical, delicious, and scalable.
Next time you eat, imagine your spoon feeding the planet instead of polluting it.
