What if carbon footprint data became as visible and accessible as price tags or nutritional labels? That world may be closer than we think.

The OECD’s Latest Paper: A Vision for Carbon Transparency

In its latest work, the OECD explores the transformative potential of carbon footprint transparency. At its core, the report argues a simple but profound idea: what gets measured, gets managed.

By making emissions data more precise and widely available, we unlock a powerful chain reaction:

• Smarter public policies.
• More climate-aligned investment.
• A new generation of empowered consumers.
• Innovation tailored to a low-carbon future.

Why This Matters Now

Over the past decade, businesses have made big strides in carbon reporting especially on Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (energy-related) emissions. However, the real challenge lies in Scope 3: the upstream and downstream emissions embedded in complex supply chains. These often go unmeasured and underreported.

Despite growing pressure for transparency, companies still face fragmented standards, inconsistent methodologies, data gaps, and high compliance costs. But change is underway. Initiatives like PACT (Partnership for Carbon Transparency) and Catena-X are laying the groundwork for harmonized emissions tracking and cross-industry data sharing a crucial step toward interoperability at scale.

A Future Powered by Granular Carbon Data

With robust and interoperable systems in place, this data could:

• Enable governments to tailor policies like carbon pricing, tax incentives, or regulatory thresholds based on accurate emissions profiles.

Collaboration Is the Cornerstone

While the dream of perfect data may be aspirational, progress lies in proportionality and practicality. We don’t need perfection to make a difference we need better systems, inclusive frameworks, and a shared commitment to transparency.

Cross-sector collaboration will be critical. Governments, tech platforms, regulators, industry associations, financial institutions, and civil society must all play their part in building a reliable carbon accounting ecosystem.
