Urban Analysis Report 2020 Mataram

Addressing the threat of climate change remains a top priority for the European Union (EU). The European Green Deal stands as a strategic response to these challenges, aiming to transform the EU into a fair and prosperous society, driven by a modern, resource-efficient, and competitive economy that achieves zero net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050.

Through the Climate Resilient and Inclusive Cities (CRIC) project, the EU and Indonesia are collaborating to assist cities in building a resilient and inclusive future. This collaboration fosters partnerships between governments, businesses, local communities, and research institutions across Europe, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

Undoubtedly, challenges persist, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, our response to the pandemic must be sustainable, addressing both climate change and the need for economic recovery. Recently, in Sukabumi City, West Java Province, a flash flood claimed lives and displaced hundreds of residents. According to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, the nation is expected to experience more hydrometeorological disasters as a result of climate change. The CRIC Urban Analysis Report serves as a timely reminder that cities cannot afford to delay their sustainable transition.

This report, covering ten Indonesian pilot cities under the CRIC project—Pangkalpinang, Pekanbaru, Bandar Lampung, Cirebon, Banjarmasin, Samarinda, Mataram, Kupang, Gorontalo, and Ternate—provides a detailed analysis of urban characteristics, policy gaps, and climate-related policies. It offers empirical evidence to support cities in crafting strategies and tools to bolster sectors impacted by climate change. I am pleased to see extensive consultations with diverse stakeholders, including government officials, academics, civil society, professional practitioners, NGOs, and the private sector, ensuring that the proposals are inclusive and comprehensive.

We eagerly anticipate the cities adopting these recommendations and translating them into local climate-resilient policies and programs. Furthermore, we look forward to continued collaboration to build cities that are both climate resilient and inclusive.
