Vietnam Coastline: Reclaiming Public Access, Resisting Privatization

Who owns the coast? And who designs its future?
Nha Trang is proposing a 4.3 km underground tunnel for car traffic along its beachfront. The goal? “Free up” the coastal road above for a better urban experience.
But here’s the paradox: more cars underground won’t create a people-friendly coastline above. It just repackages a car-centric logic.
👉 In my recent research (Vietnam Coastline – Fighting Against Its Privatization), I explore how the design of coastal roads defines the accessibility, equity, and public value of beachfronts.
From Santa Monica to Da Nang, the lesson is clear: roads must become part of the urban beach experience, not an obstacle or a tunnel for traffic to bypass life.
We don’t need more infrastructure for cars. We need better public transit.
