5 ways to accelerate sustainable transport in Latin America and the Carabbean

Reshaping Our Journeys: Why Sustainable Transport is Crucial for Latin America and the Caribbean ๐
It’s time for a radical rethink of how we move. The transport sector stands as a major contributor to global emissions, demanding urgent attention if we are to meet our climate goals.
Nowhere is this more evident than in Latin America and the Caribbean, where Climate Week 2025 has been underway. Despite boasting one of the cleanest energy grids in the world, the region’s transport sector remains overwhelmingly reliant on fossil fuels. This reliance translates into a significant burden, accounting for an average of 39% of emissions from the energy sector across the region. This paradoxical situation highlights a critical disconnect: clean electricity generation is undermined by a carbon-intensive approach to mobility.
At UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), we’re actively supporting countries across the region to bridge this gap. Our mission is to help nations align their ambitious climate targets with practical, impactful strategies specifically designed to reduce emissions stemming from their transport sectors.
Gianluca Merlo, our esteemed expert from PNUD en Amรฉrica Latina y el Caribe, offers five crucial recommendations that governments can leverage to accelerate their transition towards truly sustainable transport systems. These aren’t just suggestions; they’re vital steps towards a greener, more resilient future for the entire region.
