2030 Forest vision : 2025 priority actions for government

Nearly four years have passed since 140 governments united under a bold pledge to save the world’s forests by 2030. Yet, despite the promises, the reality on the ground tells a different story forest loss and degradation continue at an alarming rate. As COP30 approaches in Belém, the time for words has long passed; the time for action is now.

The newly launched 2030 Global Forest Vision lays out an urgent and compelling call-to-action, challenging governments to turn ambition into impact by prioritizing eight critical actions in 2025. These steps are not mere recommendations; they are a roadmap to reversing the tide of deforestation and degradation before it is too late.

1. Rekindling Ambition for Forest Goals

It is not enough to set goals they must be woven into the very fabric of national climate and biodiversity plans. Governments must integrate forest protection into upcoming conference outcomes and stand firm on delivering measurable results.

2. Promoting Ethical and Sustainable Trade

Partnerships must go beyond economics. Governments need to champion legal, deforestation-, conversion-, and degradation-free trade. Trade policies must reflect a commitment to preserving forests, not exploiting them.

3. Scaling Up Forest Finance

Words won’t save forests; finance will. A significant increase in funding is crucial to support forest conservation efforts. Public and private sectors must work hand-in-hand to direct capital where it matters most.

4. Empowering Indigenous and Local Communities

Forests thrive where people thrive. Protecting the land rights and self-determination of Indigenous, Afro-descendent, and local communities is non-negotiable. Scaling up finance to support these communities is a matter of justice, not charity.

5. Holding Financial Institutions Accountable

Money talks, but it must speak the language of sustainability. Financial institutions must implement comprehensive supervisory expectations to mitigate forest-related risks. Addressing these risks is essential to preventing further degradation.

6. Repurposing Harmful Subsidies

Billions in subsidies still fuel deforestation. Governments must identify and redirect these funds toward sustainable food systems, a thriving bioeconomy, and sustainable forest management. Subsidies should support solutions, not destruction.

7. Strengthening Land-Use Governance

Weak governance breeds exploitation. Legal frameworks, law enforcement, transparency, and accountability must be reinforced. Governments must ensure that those who harm forests face consequences.

8. Breaking the Cycle of Debt

Debt should not dictate the fate of forests. Addressing the vicious cycle of debt and increasing fiscal flexibility in multilateral development finance will empower nations to prioritize forest conservation over short-term financial pressures.

The Road to Belém: A Defining Moment COP30 is more than a conference; it is a test of commitment. Governments must arrive in Belém with more than promises – they must bring results. The 2030 Global Forest Vision is a call not just to talk about saving forests but to take the bold steps necessary to make it a reality.
