Cities After Dark: Rethinking Urban Life Beyond Daylight

Most of our planning and policymaking stops when the sun goes down, but urban life doesn’t. Reading through “Cities After Dark”, I was struck by how cities transform at night:
• Public spaces become quieter or more alive, depending on the context
• Workers in night economies remain unseen and underserved
• Safety, accessibility, and inclusivity often take a backseat
As an urban planner, I believe we need to ask: Who are our cities designed for after dark? From transport systems and lighting to the cultural and social life that blooms at night, the nocturnal city deserves as much intentional design and care as the one we see in daylight.
It’s time to spotlight the night.
