Guidelines For The Eradication Of Open Burning

We’re very happy to be sharing these – uncontrolled open burning is how the majority of unmanaged waste in Indonesia is dealt with, as in much of the world, and there is a growing understanding in terms of impact on local public health and the global environment.

This guidance was developed by our frontline Project STOP team in partnership with Banyuwangi Regency in East Java, as they actively looked to see what practical steps were needed to eradicate open waste burning in target areas – taking an approach that looked at the required policy changes to ensure a solid legal basis of site closures and enforcement, how to change behaviour within identified hotspots away from such practices and then crucially backstopped by the implementation of waste collection to provide an alternative disposal route. Whilst of course it is tailored to the local context it has global applicability.
