Penerapan Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) dalam Pengelolaan Pesisir: Studi Kasus Gili Genting, Sumenep, Madura.

What appears to be a thriving coastal destination often reveals a far more complex reality on the ground.

During a field study or what we called “turun lapangan” in Gili Genting, Sumenep, me, Jihan Indah Maharani, kayla Inara, and Helga Amanda explored how Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) is implemented in practice. The experience showed how deeply local communities depend on marine resources not only for income, but also for food security, transportation, and daily life.

At the same time, this dependency creates overlapping uses of coastal space. In Pantai Sembilan, unclear land ownership and governance have led to conflicts between stakeholders, highlighting the absence of a coordinated management system. Fisheries, tourism, and transportation continue to develop, but largely operate without integration.

Despite having strong ecological potential supported by mangroves, seagrass, and coral ecosystems, there is still no formal conservation framework in place to ensure long-term sustainability.

This study reinforced one key insight: the challenge is not the lack of potential, but the lack of integration and effective governance. ICZM, therefore, becomes essential as an approach to balance environmental sustainability with economic and social needs.

Being there in person made us realize that coastal management is not just about policies and frameworks, but about people, livelihoods, and real trade-offs happening every day.
