Carbon Markets 101

Parts 1 and 2 were written for anyone new to carbon markets. Part 3 is written for a narrower audience: government teams.

Module 1, Part 3, Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, from UNDP’s High-Integrity Carbon Markets Toolkit, is a full training for the officials who actually authorize these deals.

Here is what it covers:

📌 Article 6.2 itself — the mechanism that lets countries trade “mitigation outcomes” with each other through voluntary cooperation, rather than through a single UN-run system
📌 Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) — the actual unit that moves between a selling country and a buying country
📌 Corresponding adjustments — the accounting step that stops both countries from claiming the same tonne of reduced COâ‚‚e toward their own climate targets 📌 What “authorizing” a cooperative approach actually requires from a government, step by step

If you advise governments, sit inside a ministry, or work with a country building its Article 6.2 strategy, this is the one to sit with properly, not skim.
