Who is in the tree?

A tree supports an incredible amount of life, from microscopic organisms to large mammals. It’s estimated that one mature tree can support hundreds or even thousands of different species, including insects, fungi, birds, and mammals. For example:

  • Insects: Trees host a wide variety of insects, such as beetles, caterpillars, and ants. Some trees can support thousands of insects, which in turn provide food for other animals.
  • Birds: Trees provide nesting sites, food (fruits, seeds, insects), and shelter. A single tree can support dozens of bird species, including songbirds, owls, and woodpeckers.
  • Mammals: Larger trees can be home to squirrels, bats, raccoons, and even some larger mammals like monkeys or jaguars in tropical areas.
  • Fungi and Microorganisms: The roots, bark, and wood of trees are habitats for a vast range of fungi, bacteria, and other microorganisms, which play essential roles in the ecosystem, such as decomposing organic matter and recycling nutrients.

The tree acts as a mini-ecosystem, providing food, shelter, and a habitat for countless species, and its impact on biodiversity is enormous.
