SDG progress report

The 2024 UNECE SDG Progress Report paints a stark picture of limited progress in the region toward achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Here are the key takeaways on where efforts stand:

1. On-Track Targets (20 out of 117):

  • Only 17% of measurable targets are on course to be met by 2030, marking a decrease from the previous year’s 21 targets. This indicates that fewer goals are progressing as anticipated, underscoring a need for intensified action.

2. Targets Requiring Accelerated Action (80 targets):

  • 80 targets require faster progress to stay on track. For these, existing efforts are not sufficient, and without intervention, they are unlikely to meet the 2030 timeline.

3. Targets Needing a Complete Reversal (17 targets):

  • 17 targets show negative trends that will need a complete reversal to meet 2030 aspirations, highlighting a critical need to change current directions.

4. Social Goals – Poverty and Food Security:

  • Poverty Reduction: Progress on reducing poverty remains sluggish, with multidimensional poverty and inadequate social protections still affecting vulnerable populations.
  • Food Security: Alarming trends in food security include rising levels of adult food insecurity and childhood obesity, indicating deteriorating conditions for both access to and quality of food.

5. Environmental Targets:

  • Of all environmental SDGs, only two goals are on track, while seven targets urgently require corrective actions. Key challenges include climate adaptation, natural resource management, and biodiversity conservation. Without timely interventions, further environmental degradation may continue.

6. Economic Goals and Inequality:

  • Economic recovery from the pandemic has been modest, with ongoing inequality within countries slowing sustainable growth. Progress on financial inclusion and employment remains too slow to achieve the desired targets by 2030, signaling a need for robust support to boost inclusivity in economic systems.

Overall Findings:

  • The report stresses that unless there are substantial shifts in policy, investment, and cooperation across social, economic, and environmental spheres, the UNECE region faces a high risk of failing to achieve crucial 2030 targets. Bridging these gaps will require enhanced commitment to sustainability initiatives, innovative approaches to inclusive development, and intensified climate and resource management strategies.
