Connective Cities Dialogue Event

Unlocking the Potential of Sustainable Urban Mobility

The coat of arms of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen features a silver key, symbolizing the unlocking of new possibilities. This is particularly fitting for the Connective Cities’ dialogue event on “Sustainable Urban Mobility: Strategies and Pathways towards More Efficient, Inclusive, and Environmentally Sustainable Cities.”

From 19 to 21 June 2017, the event brought together over 30 practitioners from 10 countries, including South Africa, Brazil, Lithuania, Macedonia, Namibia, Thailand, and Germany.

Bremen: A Model for Sustainable Mobility

Bremen is not only a historic city but also a Federal State of Germany. The city boasts longer bicycle lanes than Copenhagen, and cycling accounts for 22% of the city’s modal split. With such a strong commitment to sustainable mobility, Bremen provided an ideal setting for a lively exchange of ideas and experiences among participants.

Beyond cycling, Bremen is also a leader in car-sharing initiatives. During the event, participants explored these aspects through two inspiring field tours—on foot and by bike—organized by our Bremen hosts. Additionally, they had the exclusive opportunity to preview one of Bremen’s first three electric public buses before its official inauguration.

Acknowledgments

The Connective Cities team and its partners extend their sincere gratitude to the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen for co-organizing the event and sharing invaluable insights and experiences. A special thanks also goes to the Bremen University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Bremen) for hosting the event on its premises. Bremen’s warm hospitality and excellent cooperation will always be remembered.

Most importantly, we express heartfelt appreciation to the participants for their engaging case studies, rich expertise, and meaningful contributions to the discussions.
