Medellín Turns Green, Turns Cool

Medellín, Colombia is showing the world how nature can fight the heat. Faced with rising urban temperatures and air pollution, the city launched an ambitious plan to create over 30 green corridors — networks of trees, plants, parks, vertical gardens, and shaded pathways designed to cool streets, improve air quality, and enhance urban life.

Since the program began, Medellín has planted 2.5 million plants and 880,000 trees, carefully selected and strategically placed to maximize shade, airflow, and ecological benefits. The results have been remarkable: areas within the green corridors have seen temperatures drop by more than 2 °C, effectively reducing the urban heat island effect that once made the city much hotter than its surroundings.

But the impact goes beyond temperature. The expanded greenery filters air pollution, supports local biodiversity, and creates inviting public spaces for walking, cycling, and community gatherings. Residents now enjoy cleaner air, cooler streets, and a closer connection to nature in their daily lives.

Medellín’s success demonstrates the power of nature-based urban solutions. With relatively low cost compared to massive infrastructure projects, strategic planting can deliver measurable climate benefits, improve health, and make cities more livable.

This is a model for cities worldwide facing rising heat and pollution: invest in green corridors, plant strategically, and let nature do the work. The combination of planning, plants, and people can turn hot, congested streets into cooler, cleaner, and healthier urban spaces.
