Designing Safer Public Spaces for Everyone

Parks and urban spaces are vital for our communities, but as the Safer Parks report reveals, they often fall short for women and girls. The findings from this collaboration between the University of Leeds, Keep Britain Tidy, and others highlight a critical issue: many of our public spaces were not designed with the needs of women and girls in mind. This has led to a significant disparity in safety and accessibility.

Key Strategies for Inclusive Design

To create public spaces where everyone feels safe and welcome, we need a fundamental shift in our approach. The report emphasizes three key areas for change:

  • Prioritize Safety Through Design: Simple yet impactful design choices can make a huge difference. Think about implementing better lighting to eliminate dark spots, creating clear sightlines so people can see their surroundings, and ensuring there are accessible and well-marked escape routes. These features are not just aesthetic—they’re crucial for making people feel secure.
  • Embrace Community Co-design: The most effective solutions come from the people who use the spaces. By actively involving women and girls in the design process, we can ensure their perspectives are at the forefront. Co-design isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a powerful tool for creating spaces that genuinely serve the community.
  • Look for Global Inspiration: We don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Cities around the world are already leading the way. From Vienna’s pioneering gender-mainstreaming in urban planning to Toronto’s women-led management of public spaces, there are countless examples of how inclusive practices can create more welcoming environments.

A Call to Action

The report’s foreword states it perfectly: “Our towns and cities have been designed primarily by men, and as a result, they work less well for women.” This is a powerful and sobering observation. But it’s also a call to action. It’s time for us to advocate for change. By championing inclusive design, we can create public spaces that are not just safe, but also empowering, allowing everyone to thrive. It’s a matter of equity, and it’s a necessary step toward building better, more inclusive communities.
