Shenzen from Fishing Village to a Megacity

In less than 40 years, Shenzhen went from being a fishing village to a megacity with nearly 14 million inhabitants.
Between 1979 and 2017, the urban area expanded 35-fold, from 26 km² to 946 km². This meteoric growth, however, was accompanied by profound impacts: the city lost nearly 660 km² of forests, as well as vast agricultural and coastal areas.
The consequences are already visible: 🌡️ heat islands, 🌊 recurring floods, 🌫️ pollution, and 🐾 biodiversity loss.
Shenzhen is an extreme portrait of how rapid urbanization can transform—and often compromise—the quality of life in cities.
The challenge that remains is global: how to grow without destroying the very resources that make urban life possible?
👉 At Cities Forum, we believe this is the central debate for building more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive cities.
