Why Lakes Matter for People and the Planet

Lakes sustain life. They provide 90% of the world’s surface freshwater, support biodiversity, regulate climate, and power economies. From drinking water to food security, from carbon storage to culture, lakes are vital.

But many lakes today are in crisis.

Pollution, overuse, and rising temperatures are driving widespread decline. More than a quarter of monitored lakes are becoming more polluted and turbid. Habitats are disappearing. Aquatic life is under threat.

And despite their importance, lakes are often left out of national policies.

It’s time to work to change that. The knowledge and the technology to restore our lakes exist; what’s needed now is the will to treat them as the vital resources they are.
