Islam & nature a briefing paper

Islamic worldviews hold significant weight in promoting environmental protection and preservation. This stems from a core belief: humans ate stewards (“khalifah”) entrusted with safeguarding and responsibly managing nature for the benefit of all living beings. This principle aligns perfectly with the global discourse on sustainability, offering a valuable ethical framework for environmental conservation efforts.

WWE-Malaysia’s pioneering handbook, “Islam, Wildlife Conservation and You,” exemplifies this approach. It integrates environmental consciousness with Islamic principles, aiming to engage Muslim communities, particularly in Malaysia, in biodiversity conservation. The handbook also emphasises the importance of protecting endangered species such as tigers and marine turtles. Complementing this initiative, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (UCN) published “Islamic Principles for the Conservation of the Natural Environment.” This paper underscores the importance of integrating Islamic values into environmental legislation and management. It highlights how cultural roots and ethical frameworks can strengthen conservation efforts, particularly in Muslim-majority countries.

The rapid pace of technological and industrial advancement presents a pressing global challenge. Driving
progress and development often comes at the expense of ecological degradation. Existing environmental
legislation in many societies struggles to keep pace. This necessitates the development of comprehensive and effective strategies and plans, especially in Islamic countries, where Islamic values can serve as a powerful motivator for sustainable practices.

This briefing paper synthesises insights from W’WF-Malaysia and IUCN publications, aiming to foster a deeper understanding of the intrinsic connection between Islam and nature conservation for a global audience. We encourage decision-makers, journalists, and academics to explore this vital intersection, promoting sustainable practices worldwide. This initiative lays the groundwork for future research and action in this critical field.
