Greenland mineral resources strategy 2025-2029

The Mineral Resources Strategy sets the direction for the Government of Greenland’s policies and initiatives in the mineral resources sector. The strategy replaces the Mineral Resources Strategy 2020 –
2024 and has been prepared by the Government of Greenland with input from industry and
stakeholders.
The previous strategy consisted of five focus areas:
1. Strengthened geological knowledge sharing,
2. Efficient, predictable and transparent case handling,
3. Simplified transition from exploration to exploitation,
4. Sustainable development of the mineral resources industry and
5. Competitive tax and royalty model.
Whereas the previous strategy worked on a more general strategic plan for the development of the mineral resources area, the goals for the mineral resources sector are concretized in the new Mineral Resources Strategy with measurable initiatives. In several areas, the initiatives build on the efforts in the previous strategy:
- Work continues to increase the amount and availability of geological data, as large parts of
Greenland have not been mapped on the scale and data type demanded by industry. - The focus will continue to be on efficient case handling, but the Mineral Resources Strategy
2025-2029 includes several initiatives aimed at creating attractive investment frameworks, as
lack of investors is a global challenge for exploration companies, both large and small. - Last but not least, the work for sustainable development of the mineral resources area began
in the last strategy period. This work is being intensified and concretized, and at the same time
supplemented with initiatives related to mineral resources defined as critical by our partners.
In the Mineral Resources Strategy 2025 – 2029, the Government of Greenland works with sustainability in a broad sense. We use the concept of sustainability in several branches of the mineral resources industry, including social sustainability, environmental sustainability and economic sustainability.
Social sustainability relates, among other things, to secure labor market conditions, regardless of
gender, and the right and opportunity to education and work. Environmental sustainability ensures a clear framework for a behavior that protects the nature and the environment as much as possible. Economic sustainability creates economic growth with consideration for society so that development
is done in an appropriate way.
