THE CLIMATE STRATEGY TOOLKIT: LESSONS FROM BCG

What I Learned About Sustainability Consulting from BCG’s Climate Simulation
I recently completed the BCG Climate & Sustainability Job Simulation on Forage, where I stepped into the shoes of a consultant advising a fictional car company, FastCars, on reaching Net Zero.
Here’s what I learned — and why it matters:
Key tools & concepts I applied:
1. SBTi (Science-Based Targets Initiative): Helped set credible emissions reduction goals aligned with climate science.
2. EPA’s 3 Scopes of Emissions: Scope 3 (supply chain, use-phase) can be the hardest to control — but it’s also where big impact lies.
3. CDP Disclosure Ratings: Learned how companies are assessed — from Disclosure to Leadership level — and how this impacts investor confidence.
4. Abatement Curves: A brilliant tool to prioritize carbon reduction initiatives based on cost vs impact.
5. Opportunity-Risk Matrix: Helped visualize trade-offs in decision-making — a practical tool I’d now use in any strategy session.
6. Client Communication: Crafted insight-driven emails and presentations tailored to both execs and investors.
My biggest takeaway?
1. Good sustainability strategy = smart business strategy. It’s not just about being green; it’s about reducing risk, optimizing cost, and building trust.
2. Its not just about data – Communication style matters not just to get buy-ins but also to build confidence and trust.
🌱 Have you come across tools like abatement curves or CDP scores in your work or studies? I’d love to hear how you are applying sustainability frameworks in real-life projects.
