What exactly are the 17 SDGs and why do they matter to businesses?
When people hear “Sustainable Development Goals”, they often think of a list of 17 goals created by the United Nations.

But the SDGs are much more than a checklist! They cover some of the biggest challenges facing the world today ranging from poverty, hunger and inequality to climate change, biodiversity, responsible consumption and strong institutions.
Adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, the 17 SDGs provide a shared blueprint for building a more sustainable and inclusive world by 2030.

In this article of Decoding Sustainability, we have explained:
• What are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals?
• What does each SDG actually aim to achieve?
• How are the SDGs connected to ESG?
• How can businesses contribute to achieving these goals?
• Why should companies look beyond simply “aligning” with the SDGs?
• How can the SDGs be translated from global ambition into meaningful action?

Whether you’re a student, aspiring sustainability professional, entrepreneur or simply curious about ESG, this article will help you understand the SDGs and why they matter beyond just sustainability reporting.
