Beyond the private car managing sustainable mobility in everyday life

This thesis is about the role of mobility and car use in everyday life, and how this role plays out in the absence of private car ownership. My interest in the topic stems from a long-lasting fascination in how people move about to organise the ordinary activities of everyday life, paired with an increasing sense of urgency regarding the need for a sustainable transition of the mobility system. By studying how the carless – defined here as individuals living in households without car ownership – organise their everyday lives amid a car-based society, I seek to understand the preconditions for a mobility transition that would entail less car use. This thesis contributes to ongoing debates in policy and academia about how to realise a transition toward a low-carbon future, in which the mobility system dominated by private cars presents one of the most intricate and challenging problems. This research is also a scholarly contribution on how to theorise and investigate the role of mobility in everyday life – as situated not only with the individual but also in relation to wider social practices. The car is a very convenient mode of transportation because it enables fast, flexible and individualised on-demand mobility. Unfortunately, the negative externalities of car use are becoming hard to ignore. In addition to local problems related to the environment and health, car use is a major contributor to global climate change. In Sweden, a third of greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation, of which about 60% is emitted from personal cars (Naturvårdsverket, 2023). National climate targets set for 2030 aim for reductions in emissions from domestic transportation (excluding air transportation) by at least 70% between 2010 and 2030. In Sweden, policy assessment has concluded that, while better energy efficiency and electrification of vehicles are important parts of the solution, car use reduction through a ‘transport efficient society’ (Naturvårdsverket, 2022) is necessary to reach national climate targets.
