Championing community resilience: EVA studio’s visionary urban design transforms lives in haiti

Winner of the Private Sector Award for Contribution to Territorial Planning, Urban Planning, and Design, Emergent Vernacular Architecture (EVA Studio) has set a benchmark in transforming urban spaces. Through their exemplary work in Carrefour-Feuilles, Haiti, EVA Studio demonstrated how thoughtful design and a participatory approach can empower communities, enhance resilience, and create a lasting impact on urban life.
Haiti, a country long defined by its resilience in the face of adversity, is home to a stark urban reality: 74.4% of its urban population resides in informal settlements (2014 WHO estimate). These densely packed neighborhoods often lack access to basic services, with homes precariously perched along ravines and narrow alleys. The devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake in January 2010 laid bare the vulnerabilities of this urban fabric, displacing over one million people and ravaging Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital. But in the shadow of tragedy arose an opportunity to reimagine the future of the city, one public space at a time.
Reclaiming Spaces, Reviving Hope
In Carrefour-Feuilles, a neighborhood characterized by its dense and chaotic landscape, EVA Studio embarked on a transformative journey under the Lavi Nan Miyò Katye Pam (LAMIKA) Program, a collaborative reconstruction initiative between the American Red Cross and Haitian authorities. Tasked with designing and supervising the construction of three public spaces—Place Tapis Rouge, Place Kay Alfred, and Terrain Campeche—EVA Studio redefined how urban interventions can blend functionality with community-driven design.
1. Place Tapis Rouge: A Symbol of Renewal
Once a vacant plot turned refugee camp after the earthquake, Place Tapis Rouge (Tapi Wouj in Haitian Creole) is now a beacon of transformation. Positioned near a public school and hosting the area’s only water distribution station, this revitalized space fosters connectivity, pride, and identity. Community involvement was central to the design, creating a place that resonates with local dynamics and provides a safe, inclusive environment for residents of all ages.
2. Place Kay Alfred: Bridging Communities
Nestled at the bottom of a ravine, Place Kay Alfred was once prone to flooding and used as an informal soccer field. EVA Studio’s redesign mitigated environmental risks by securing the slopes and bridging the ravine, transforming the space into a vibrant hub with a basketball court, playground, and green areas. This intervention doubled the area available for the community, creating a space that bridges not only physical divides but also social ones.
3. Terrain Campeche: A Field of Dreams
Terrain Campeche, renowned for hosting local football tournaments, received a fresh lease of life with the addition of artificial turf, improved accessibility, and regular maintenance systems. Beyond its role as a sports venue, the upgraded space now draws visitors from other neighborhoods, fostering cross-community connections and local pride.
Impacting Lives: The Ripple Effect of Public Spaces
The benefits of these projects extend far beyond their physical boundaries. Over 6,000 residents directly benefit from the public spaces, with countless others reaping the indirect rewards of improved accessibility, reduced environmental risks, and enhanced social cohesion.
- Improved Accessibility: By strengthening pedestrian connectivity and securing paths, the designs have made movement safer and more efficient, vital in a neighborhood defined by its labyrinth of narrow alleys.
- Environmental and Health Resilience: Functional drainage systems and waste collectors address long-standing issues of stagnant water and sanitation, mitigating flood risks and health hazards.
- Climate Adaptation: The integration of resilient vegetation and shaded areas not only combats urban heat but also enriches the community’s outdoor experience.
- Safety and Security: Solar lights and fencing provide a sense of safety, particularly valued by women and children who now enjoy secure spaces for recreation and socialization.
Empowering Communities Through Design
At the heart of EVA Studio’s approach is an inclusive process that places community members at the center. From participatory design workshops to cultural input on vegetation, this collaboration fosters a sense of ownership that ensures the longevity and maintenance of the spaces. Artistic workshops, such as those held at Place Tapis Rouge, celebrated traditional Haitian art, fostering dialogue and pride in cultural heritage.
Lessons for the Future
EVA Studio’s success in Carrefour-Feuilles challenges the notion that public spaces are merely aesthetic additions. Instead, they are essential elements of the urban fabric, capable of addressing environmental risks, enhancing quality of life, and building resilience in informal settlements. Key lessons include:
- Quality Public Spaces on a Budget: Integrating public spaces with essential mitigation infrastructure demonstrates that transformative design need not come at a high cost—it requires cultural sensitivity and environmental appropriateness.
- Inclusive Design for Longevity: Active community participation ensures not only successful implementation but also long-term maintenance and empowerment.
- Public Spaces as Catalysts for Resilience: Beyond aesthetics, public spaces organize fragmented settlements, improve access to services, and foster social cohesion.
A Blueprint for Change
The transformation of Carrefour-Feuilles underscores the potential of architecture and urban design as tools for resilience and empowerment. By turning challenges into opportunities, EVA Studio has provided a blueprint for addressing the complexities of informal urban settlements worldwide. In the words of the residents, these spaces are more than just physical improvements—they are symbols of hope, unity, and a brighter future.
