Impact of climate change on human health

Climate change significantly impacts human health, creating new challenges and amplifying existing ones. Here are some of the main ways it affects health:

1. Heat-Related Illnesses and Deaths

  • Rising temperatures lead to more frequent and intense heatwaves, increasing risks of heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and dehydration, especially among vulnerable populations like the elderly, children, and outdoor workers. Extreme heat can also exacerbate cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.
  • The urban heat island effect worsens these impacts in cities, where concrete and buildings retain heat, creating dangerously high temperatures.

2. Respiratory and Cardiovascular Issues

  • Air quality deteriorates with higher temperatures and pollution. Warmer weather increases ground-level ozone and airborne particulate matter, exacerbating asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other respiratory conditions.
  • Forest fires, which are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change, also contribute to poor air quality, affecting millions of people’s respiratory health globally.

3. Spread of Infectious Diseases

  • Warmer temperatures and shifting precipitation patterns expand habitats for disease-carrying vectors like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas. Diseases like malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, Lyme disease, and West Nile virus are now appearing in areas previously unaffected.
  • Waterborne diseases, including cholera, also become more common due to extreme weather events like floods, which contaminate drinking water sources.

4. Food and Water Security

  • Climate change disrupts food production due to extreme weather events like droughts, floods, and unpredictable growing seasons, leading to food shortages, higher prices, and malnutrition. Nutrient content in crops is also decreasing due to higher CO₂ levels, which reduces their nutritional quality.
  • Water scarcity is on the rise due to altered rainfall patterns, melting glaciers, and droughts. This affects access to clean water, leading to dehydration, poor sanitation, and waterborne diseases.

5. Mental Health Impacts

  • Experiencing or witnessing extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, wildfires, and floods, can lead to stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Chronic stress is also common in communities affected by gradual changes, like sea-level rise or prolonged drought.
  • Displacement due to climate-related disasters further exacerbates mental health issues by disrupting communities and separating people from their homes and support systems.

6. Nutritional Health

  • Changes in agriculture due to climate stress can result in reduced crop yields, affecting the availability of nutritious food. Reduced protein content in staple crops and a decrease in essential minerals can increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies.
  • People who depend on fishing are also at risk as ocean acidification and warming reduce fish populations, impacting dietary sources of protein and other nutrients.

7. Impact on Healthcare Systems

  • Climate-related disasters put immense pressure on healthcare systems, often overwhelming resources and infrastructure. Hospitals may struggle to cope with surges in patients during heatwaves, outbreaks, and extreme weather events.
  • Climate change also disrupts supply chains for medical supplies, making it difficult for healthcare providers to offer timely treatment.

Adaptation and Mitigation Efforts

Addressing these health impacts requires both adaptation and mitigation efforts. Examples include developing resilient healthcare infrastructure, improving early warning systems for heatwaves and vector-borne diseases, promoting sustainable urban planning to reduce heat in cities, and enhancing public awareness of health risks associated with climate change.

These combined strategies can help protect human health from the multifaceted threats posed by a changing climate.
