Sustainable Cities: Bridging the Gap Between Vision and Reality

I expect to find the reader in strong agreement if I advocate for more sustainable cities: powered by renewable energy, fostering recycling and a circular economy, embracing diversity in all its forms, promoting social integration, and seamlessly including vulnerable groups. Yet, reality has not yet caught up with this vision.

The United Nations estimates that by 2030, 16.5% of the global population will be over the age of 60, and 59% of us will be living in cities. Even before reaching these milestones, cities already contribute two-thirds of global emissions and consume over 70% of global energy production. Fossil fuels, long considered a cheap energy source, still make up a significant portion of our energy needs, but burning these non-renewable fuels contributes to 87% of carbon dioxide emissions. This starkly contrasts with the ideal of net-zero emissions and a circular lifestyle that many envision as essential to protecting the planet’s future—a goal that is not only a moral obligation but a matter of survival.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further threatened livelihoods and exacerbated existing socio-economic inequalities, all against a backdrop of rising tensions and polarization. It is imperative that cities act quickly to bridge the gap between their vision of the “ideal city” and the current reality. Here, I outline four challenges that cities can address to make this vision a reality.
