Technology and the SDGs
Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals demands large-scale transformations. Technology, when strategically applied, offers powerful tools to accelerate systemic progress across multiple sectors.
A framework developed by the World Economic Forum and PwC outlines 20 innovation “moonshots” aligned with the SDGs. These concepts are enabled by Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, synthetic biology, and advanced digital infrastructure.
The moonshots address complex challenges including decarbonization, global health, food systems, and water access. Examples include AI-driven antibiotic discovery, zero-emission infrastructure, precision food systems, and next-generation carbon removal.
Many of these concepts remain highly relevant in 2025. Some have progressed toward commercialization, while others continue to shape strategic foresight and investment agendas. Their value lies in addressing multiple SDGs simultaneously through integrated solutions.
Since the publication of this framework, the technology landscape has evolved. New developments such as generative AI, climate-aligned digital tools, and nature-positive innovations are reshaping priorities and require updated attention.
Impact depends not only on technological advancement but also on how solutions are governed, financed, and deployed. Responsible innovation must be guided by social equity, environmental thresholds, and long-term systems thinking.
