Why Indonesia clean energy future will be shaped by US-China rivalry

Trapped Between Giants: Why Indonesia’s Clean Energy Future is a US-China Chess Match

Indonesia, a powerhouse of the Global South and a critical source of nickel and other minerals vital for the energy transition, finds its clean energy future caught in the crosshairs of the US-China rivalry. This is more than a trade spat; it is a clash of two fundamentally different visions for the world’s energy future, and Jakarta is struggling to find stable footing.

The core tension is clear: as we transition to cleaner, more resilient energy systems, the very definition of energy security is being rewritten and every nation, including Indonesia, is realizing that clinging to the past is no longer an option.

The Great Balancing Act: Technology vs. Investment

Indonesia possesses immense renewable energy potential and the essential raw materials for electric vehicle batteries, but lacks the capital and manufacturing depth to go it alone. This forces an inevitable, precarious balancing act:

  • The China Factor (Investment & Speed): China offers speed, scale, and deeply integrated supply chains. Its state-backed investments have poured into Indonesia’s nickel processing, manufacturing, and downstream battery industries. Chinese companies provide the established, affordable technology and the rapid infrastructure build-out that Jakarta desperately needs to industrialize quickly.
    • The Cost: This reliance ties Indonesia’s future to Beijing’s geopolitical interests and potentially exposes it to technology risks and supply chain dominance.
  • The US Factor (Security & Standards): The United States and its allies (like Japan and South Korea) offer an alternative focused on cleaner, more transparent, and secure supply chains. Washington provides regulatory frameworks, development capital, and incentives (such as those tied to the Inflation Reduction Act) designed to pull manufacturing away from Chinese control.
    • The Cost: US influence often comes with stricter environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, and the investment may not materialize with the same speed or volume as China’s.

The Crucial Juncture

For President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Indonesian policymakers, this rivalry creates both leverage and risk. They stand at a crucial juncture:

  1. Cling to the Past: Over-rely on quick Chinese capital, cementing a fossil-fuel-based industrial model (especially in nickel smelting) with potential long-term debt and environmental costs.
  2. Step into the Future: Navigate the rivalry strategically, extracting maximum benefit from both sides securing low-cost technology from China while demanding US-backed support for high-standard, truly sustainable projects, such as geothermal and solar development.

Ultimately, Indonesia’s success in achieving a clean energy future depends on its ability to assert its strategic autonomy. The energy transition is forcing leaders to decide whether they will build a future based on the most affordable equipment, or one based on the most resilient and secure partnerships.

The decision made in Jakarta won’t just shape Indonesia’s economy; it will send a critical signal across the Global South about whether the clean energy revolution will be defined by competition or collaboration.
