2024 Forest Declaration Assessment: Forests on the Brink

Forests are not just ecosystems—they are the lungs of our planet, the guardians of biodiversity, and a frontline defense against the intertwined crises of climate change, nature degradation, and biodiversity loss. Yet, despite their indispensable role, forests are under siege. The 2024 Forest Declaration Assessment paints a stark picture: global efforts to protect and restore forests are faltering, and unless we change course, the ambitious 2030 forest goals will slip through our fingers.

This report serves as both a wake-up call and a call to action. We are now one-third of the way through the decade, and the world has barely made a dent in curbing deforestation. Instead of progress, we are witnessing the continued destruction of irreplaceable primary forests and the rapid degradation of vast forest areas.

A Critical Inflection Point

Forests, especially primary forests, are vital not only for the climate but for the countless species that depend on them. These ancient ecosystems sequester carbon, stabilize global temperatures, and house over 80% of terrestrial biodiversity. Yet, these precious forests continue to face “inexcusable destruction.” An area twice the size of Germany was degraded in 2022 alone. This level of degradation weakens forests’ ability to function as carbon sinks and ecological havens, pushing us further away from achieving the 2030 forest goals.

Fire on the Frontlines

Adding to this crisis is the growing frequency and intensity of forest fires. The fires that ravaged forests in 2023 are not natural phenomena but largely human-driven. Climate change, fueled by human activity, is making conditions hotter and drier, creating a perfect storm for wildfires. On top of this, intentional fire-setting to clear land for agriculture and development is driving forest destruction at an alarming pace. These fires not only destroy the trees but the complex web of life that depends on forest ecosystems. If we continue down this path, the 2030 forest goals will be beyond reach.

A Race Against Time: The Struggle for Restoration

While efforts to restore degraded forests are gaining momentum, the path forward is fraught with challenges. Fragmented and incomplete data make it difficult to accurately track progress. Despite this, there is hope. Local, regional, and global initiatives are working tirelessly to improve restoration monitoring, providing a glimmer of possibility in an otherwise bleak outlook. But without urgent, coordinated action, these efforts will not be enough to counterbalance the rapid pace of destruction.

Forests as Key Biodiversity Strongholds

Forested Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs)—the habitats that are critical to forest-dependent species—are under siege. In 2023 alone, over a million hectares of tree cover were lost in these crucial areas. The loss of these forests does not just mean fewer trees—it signals the collapse of habitats that sustain countless species. With every hectare of forest lost, we move closer to triggering irreversible tipping points for biodiversity.

Moving Beyond “Business as Usual”

The findings of the 2024 Forest Declaration Assessment are clear: “business as usual” is not an option if we are serious about protecting forests, addressing climate change, and securing the future of biodiversity. The world’s current economic models, driven by short-term profit at the expense of nature, are fundamentally incompatible with a sustainable future. A transformative shift in how we value and interact with forests is urgently needed. This means moving towards economic systems that prioritize conservation, restoration, and the well-being of both people and the planet.

The Time for Leadership is Now

We cannot afford complacency. Leaders at every level—from governments to businesses, from local communities to global institutions—must unite in an unwavering commitment to forest protection, conservation, and restoration. Forests must move from the periphery of global priorities to the very center of our plans for sustainable development, climate action, and biodiversity protection.

This report is not just a statement of the problem; it’s a rallying cry for change. It’s time to rewrite the story of forests—from one of destruction and exploitation to one of regeneration, resilience, and hope. The choices we make today will determine whether forests remain a source of life or become yet another casualty of human short-sightedness. The world is watching, and the stakes could not be higher.

A Vision for the Future

Achieving the 2030 forest goals is still possible, but only if we act now with boldness and ambition. This means not only halting deforestation but also embracing nature-based solutions that integrate forest conservation into broader efforts to combat climate change and protect biodiversity. It requires the global community to stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples and local communities who have long been the stewards of the world’s forests.

The 2024 Forest Declaration Assessment makes it clear: the future of forests, and by extension, the future of humanity, hangs in the balance. If we rise to the challenge, forests will continue to be our greatest allies in the fight for a livable planet. If we fail, the consequences will be catastrophic for generations to come.
