Climate Change And The Escalation Of Global Extreme Heat: Assessing And Addressing The Risks

Half the planet endured at least 30 extra days of extreme heat…

This is what happened in the past 12 months.

Last week I was in Lebanon. It was extremely hot, even in areas where it’s never been this hot before.

In Europe, friends and colleagues keep posting about the heat and how uncomfortable it’s becoming.

And the numbers confirm it:
– 4 billion people felt an extra month of dangerous heat
– In 195 countries/territories, climate change at least doubled the number of extreme heat days.
– All 67 major extreme heat events recorded in the year were made more likely by climate change.

It’s not just uncomfortable.

Extreme heat strains health systems, reduces productivity, worsens droughts, and costs lives.

We can adapt with better planning…

But without rapid cuts to emissions, this “new normal” will keep getting hotter.

Where did you feel the heat most this year?
