What is the difference between treating sustainability as compliance versus using it as a transformation driver?

In my experience, this is where most companies get stuck.

I have seen sustainability positioned as a response to external requirements, with the focus on regulations, disclosures, and risk management.

It usually sits within reporting, legal, or support functions, doing what it is supposed to do in terms of aligning with expectations and reducing exposure.

I have also seen a different approach. In those cases, sustainability starts to influence how decisions are made.

It is integrated into strategy, operations, investment priorities, and even product development.

The focus moves toward strengthening value creation, resilience, and long term competitiveness.

Both approaches are necessary. Compliance creates structure and ensures a baseline is covered.

But it does not significantly change how the business performs.

The difference shows up in practice. One approach reacts to pressure.

The other uses sustainability to shape direction.

Most organizations operate somewhere in between.

The key is being intentional about how far sustainability is used to influence the business.
