Biodiversity and Infrastructure Investing

This white paper, developed by Oliver Wyman and WWF, the global conservation organization, reviews how infrastructure investors and their advisors incorporate biodiversity into investing. It explores approaches used to assess biodiversity impacts and risks, and the rationale for considering these impacts and risks in decision-making. The paper presents perspectives on the outlook for further progress and identifies areas where improvement is most valuable.
Building on Oliver Wyman and WWF’s 2020 white paper, “Incorporating Sustainability into Infrastructure: How Climate and Nature-Related Factors Are Applied in the Investment Process,” which examined various ESG considerations, including biodiversity, this new paper aims to highlight biodiversity loss as a crisis on par with climate change. Biodiversity loss threatens the global economy and the well-being of all life. The work was supported in part by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Asia’s Linear Infrastructure safeGuarding Nature (ALIGN) Project, which seeks to enhance the development and implementation of effective, high-quality linear infrastructure safeguards that protect people and nature from harm.
