Community climate resilience partnership

This #WorldCitiesDay, we’re excited to launch four inspiring, equity-focused climate resilience projects in Boston and Houston, each powered by the voices and vision of the communities they serve. Through the #Resilience4Communities program—supported by Zurich North America and the Z Zurich Foundation—local changemakers will lead the way in designing solutions to the climate challenges they face.

In Boston’s historic Chinatown, a community with a rich cultural heritage and a close-knit spirit, Chinatown Main Street is stepping up to confront the growing threat of extreme heat. By partnering with local stakeholders, they will develop a heat adaptation action plan, empowering residents with vital health information through workshops. They’ll also launch a micro-grant program to support small businesses in adapting to climate impacts, ensuring these community cornerstones remain resilient in the face of rising temperatures.

Meanwhile, in Trinity-Houston Gardens, Target Hunger is expanding its reach to provide not only food pantry services but also vital support in navigating health, education, and skills training resources. This holistic approach aims to address the root causes of vulnerability, helping residents build resilience through access to essential services and pathways to empowerment.

Two projects in this initiative are tapping into the potential of youth changemakers who are passionate about making a difference in their neighborhoods. In Boston’s Lower Roxbury, YouthBuild will be constructing four new cooling stations—safe havens from the scorching summer heat. Through this project, young people will gain hands-on experience and training, setting them on a path to career and life success while also serving their community.

In Alief, Houston, high school students involved in AliefVotes are taking resilience into their own hands. They’ll organize workshops to help their neighbors prepare for climate hazards, equipping the community with the knowledge and resources needed to stay safe when it matters most.

These initiatives are about more than infrastructure; they’re about empowering people—especially youth, immigrants, and working-class residents—to take action. By supporting local leaders and nurturing community-driven solutions, we’re investing in a future where cities aren’t just resilient to climate change but are thriving centers of opportunity, equity, and hope. Together, we’re making resilience real for the communities who need it most.
