NYC climate week: climate finance, disinformation and resilient cities

Cities Lead the Way: Mayors Take Bold Action at Climate Week NYC
While global discussions on climate change often focus on national governments, a powerful and undeniable force for change is emerging at the local level. At Climate Week NYC, mayors and city leaders from around the world are proving that cities are not just victims of climate change but are also epicenters of innovation and resilience. They are on the front lines, tackling climate challenges head-on despite the political tides of disinformation and inaction that may exist at the national level.
Financing a Resilient Future
Cities are the perfect place for climate innovation.
During a panel discussion titled ‘Betting on a Breakthrough – Where Should the Smart Money Go Now?’, Phoenix Mayor and C40 Cities Steering Committee member Kate Gallego emphasized this point, stating, “Cities are where climate risks hit hardest, but they’re also where so much innovation starts – from transit to infrastructure.” Cities are already making significant investments in adaptation and resilience, but they can’t do it alone. To meet global climate goals, there must be a major shift in public and private finance toward city-led solutions that protect communities, create green jobs, and reduce long-term risk.
Driving the Clean Transport Revolution
The move towards a cleaner, more sustainable future is gaining momentum, and cities are at the forefront of the clean transport revolution. Mete Coban, Deputy Mayor of London and C40 Board Member, highlighted London’s progress in expanding electric vehicle access and rethinking its transport systems. However, he also acknowledged the challenges ahead, calling for faster action from national governments, more support for local authorities, and a greater focus on equity to ensure the benefits of this transition are shared by everyone. Breaking down the remaining barriers will require bold leadership and cross-sector collaboration to achieve long-term, systemic change.
Combating the Tide of Disinformation
Climate action is not just a fight against emissions; it’s also a battle against misinformation. At the Solutions Dialogue on Information Integrity, Donna Hume, C40’s Director of Political Strategy and Campaigns, addressed the rising tide of climate disinformation that threatens progress. The event focused on sharing best practices for tackling this issue and explored how to accelerate evidence-based policies. The conversation around information integrity is a critical component of climate action, and discussions will continue to build momentum leading into COP30.
A Partnership for Progress
A new strategic partnership between C40 Cities and the Ramboll Foundation is a testament to the growing confidence in cities as leaders in climate action. This collaboration, celebrated by C40 leaders and Ramboll representatives, provides unrestricted funding to help cities embed resilience and climate adaptation into their long-term planning and policies. This partnership is a powerful example of how philanthropic and corporate support can strengthen the ability of cities to protect their communities and foster an environment where people and nature can thrive.
